Maria Eagle MP spent an hour selling the Big Issue North in Liverpool City Centre alongside vendor Brian to raise awareness of homelessness.  Maria and Brian joined forces on a cold February afternoon as they hit the streets to sell the magazine to people in the city.  Maria sold 10 magazines and raised £40.10 in an hour through magazine sales and donations from passers-by.

Maria said: “I wanted to take part in the Big Sell to raise awareness for people like Brian who are working to improve their lives.  There are sometimes misconceptions about Big Issue vendors and many people do not realise that the vendors actually have to buy the magazine themselves in order to sell it to make a profit which they can then keep.  They are working, not begging, to support themselves.

I’m grateful to Brian for letting me on his patch to experience what it’s like for him as a vendor.  I’d also like to thank the Big Issue and the International Network of Street Papers for the continuous work they are doing to raise awareness about homelessness across the country.”
